Matthew Bloomfield, Chinese name FeiMeng or 'Flying Dream', was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1960. His family moved to Ohio, USA when he was still a child. Matthew maintains dual citizenship. At age 12, Matthew spent a year in France, where he became fluent in French at a French public school. There, he developed his love of language learning, and also a love for international travel.
Matthew majored in languages and literature in college in Ohio, and spent his junior year abroad studying in Exeter, England, where he again had the opportunity to travel widely in Europe. In all, Matthew has been to 34 countries so far in his life.
After graduating from college, Matthew worked as a school teacher and studied World Music, before earning a U.S. government scholarship for intensive study of Mandarin at Cornell University. The following year, Matthew was Cornell's Graduate Exchange Scholar at Beijing University, the most prestigious in China. As the only two Canadians that year, Matthew roomed with Mark Rowswell, who quickly became, and still remains, a major star throughout China with his stage name '
Da Shan.' The year was 1989, and during the TianAnMen student movement when classes were boycotted, Matthew served as translator for ABC News.
Returning to the US, Matthew worked for three years for the United Nations and UNICEF in New York, helping to edit documents in several languages. He also became the first Caucasian to pass the UN Chinese Language Proficiency examination. While at the UN, Matthew took part in an overseas mission to Cambodia, to help organize the country's first democratic elections in 1992.
Back in Ohio in 1992, Matthew taught English, French and Mandarin at Berlitz International Language School. He then worked as a medical transcriptionist, technical writer and commercial voice talent while studying for his Masters Degree in Teaching English as Second Language (TESL) and Linguistics at Ohio University. Matthew also received U.S. Government Fellowships in Chinese and Indonesian to help fund his graduate education. Matthew received his M.A. in 2001 and then taught for one year at Cendant Mobility Corporation in Ohio, training foreign corporate executives and their families in language and acculturation skills.
In Summer 2002, Matthew was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for intensive Indonesian language study in Sulawesi, Indonesia. In the Fall, Matthew wished to teach in a Chinese or Indonesian-speaking environment, and accepted a job as English Instructor at the University of Macau, where he remained until Fall, 2004. At UMac, he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in reading and writing, public speaking, research essay writing and many more. Matthew likes Macau very much, owns an apartment there and considers it his home.
In Fall 2004, Matthew was lured away from Macau by an offer to become the first English Director for Saybot LLC, a MIT-funded Shanghai startup company producing speech-interactive online lessons to help Chinese learners improve their spoken English.
Matthew left Saybot in November, 2005, to devote himself to his teaching, training and creative arts endeavors. He has since engaged in commercial voice ads for radio, TV, cable, corporate video, film soundtracks etc. He has recently co-composed the ballad '
My Home Is Basra', a chilling plea for peace in Iraq. Matthew is also active as English instructor, corporate trainer and bilingual event MC for organizations such as Citibank, KPMG, Ford China and many more.
Matthew is now launching his exciting new entertainment service entitled
The Rapping Professor. He gathers background info on a special event (private, corporate or conference) and crafts it into a tailor-written song or rap which he then records and performs live at the event. If desired, each participant can take home a CD/DVD of the work so they can relive the experience at their leisure. Matthew has set up his business
The Rapping Professor in Shanghai, and plans to expand to Macau, Singapore and other cities throughout SE Asia and beyond in the coming years. Matthew is now accepting marketing, creative and investment partnerships, and welcomes your project ideas, collaboration, feedback and support. Together, let's RAP THE WORLD!
